Postpartum recovery: how acupuncture can help

The postpartum period is one of the biggest physical, emotional and hormonal transitions many women will ever experience.

In a matter of days, the body begins recovering from pregnancy and birth while adapting to feeding, carrying and caring for a newborn. Sleep is disrupted, hormones fluctuate dramatically, and many women find themselves trying to meet everyone else's needs whilst having very little time to care for their own.

Acupuncture can support:

  • Physical recovery after birth

  • Fatigue and exhaustion

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Emotional wellbeing, anxiety and low mood

  • Baby blues and postpartum depression

  • Lactation support, blocked ducts and mastitis

  • Night sweats and temperature fluctuations

  • C-section scar healing

  • Headaches

  • Neck, shoulder and back tension

  • A general feeling of depletion

As a mother myself, I experienced first-hand how intense the postpartum period can be.

One of the symptoms I struggled with was severe night sweats. I knew they were common after birth, but I hadn't expected them to be quite so overwhelming.

Every time I finally had the opportunity to sleep, I would wake up drenched. My pyjamas were soaked, the bedsheets beneath me were wet, and I often had to get up in the middle of the night to dry myself before trying to settle again. The sheet was often so damp that I would simply lay a towel over it because I couldn't wake up my baby and partner to change the bed in the middle of the night.

What I remember most is the exhausted frustration of losing precious minutes of sleep at a time when every minute mattered. When you're waking every few hours to feed a baby, those short windows of rest become incredibly valuable. Having one more reason to wake up felt cruel.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, postpartum night sweats are not simply seen as an inconvenience. Childbirth already places significant demands on the body's reserves of Blood, Yin and Body Fluids, and night sweats are thought to further deplete those resources at a time when the body is trying to recover. They are often understood as a sign that the body needs time and support to replenish its reserves and regain balance.

I knew how effective acupuncture is for this symptom, so I went for it. The night sweats improved significantly after the first treatment and had completely disappeared after the second.

Acupuncture cannot create more hours in the day or more sleep at night. What it can do is support recovery, help the body adapt to the enormous changes taking place after birth, and help with the symptoms that can make the postpartum period even more challenging.

Acupuncture offers a dedicated space to support that recovery and help women feel more like themselves again.
