Painful periods are common. They are not normal.
Painful periods are so normalised in our society that most of us grow up believing they are simply part of being a woman.
I honestly wonder how many women around us cannot cope during their periods without painkillers, hot water bottles or spending at least a day in bed every month.
When I was younger, I think we were much more afraid to talk about it openly. Maybe it was shame, maybe it was just my generation, but I really wish someone had told me earlier:
no, debilitating period pain is not normal.
Hormonal symptoms often affect much more than the period itself. PMS, ovulation pain, bloating, hormonal migraines, fatigue, digestive symptoms, mood changes… sometimes the whole cycle can become difficult to live with.
Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches these symptoms differently. Rather than seeing pain as something the body should simply tolerate, treatment aims to understand why the body is struggling to regulate properly and how symptoms can improve more sustainably over time.
In clinic, I see many women struggling post pregnancy, as period pain and hormonal symptoms have worsened postpartum. I see women exhausted from living with severe hormonal migraines, finding that strong medication becomes less effective over time or requires increasing dosages.
I also see many women who have simply kept pushing through for years, until the body eventually starts showing red flags and making it clear that something needs to change.
And I truly wish we were all told growing up:
listen to your body.
It is not normal to live with pain, and there are ways to help it.
Acupuncture has been used for centuries to support menstrual and hormonal health, and it can make very real difference to period pain and wider hormonal symptoms.
