Acupuncture for PMS, Painful Periods and Menstrual Health
Supporting a healthier, more balanced menstrual cycle
Your menstrual cycle is one of the clearest reflections of your overall health. While minor changes in your energy levels throughout the month are completely natural, significant symptoms such as painful periods, severe menstrual cramps, low mood, irritability, fatigue, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, heavy bleeding, bleeding outside your periods, or irregular cycles should not simply be dismissed as part of being a woman.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, recurring symptoms before or during your period are seen as signs that the body has fallen out of balance. They may be common, but they are not considered something you should cope with month after month.
Acupuncture aims to restore balance throughout your menstrual cycle, while helping you feel healthier, more energised and more like yourself throughout the month.
How acupuncture can help
Acupuncture can support menstrual health by helping to:
reduce painful periods and menstrual cramps
ease PMS symptoms, including mood swings, irritability, anxiety and low mood
reduce bloating, breast tenderness and fluid retention
relieve hormonal headaches and migraines
support steadier energy and better sleep throughout the cycle
regulate irregular, unusually short or unusually long cycles
support healthier menstrual flow, whether periods are heavy, light or prolonged
reduce spotting before or between periods
support regular ovulation
reduce the impact of stress on hormonal health
improve overall wellbeing throughout the menstrual cycle
Supporting overall wellbeing
As your menstrual health improves, the benefits often extend far beyond your period.
Many women notice better sleep, steadier energy, improved mood and greater resilience to stress. Feeling well throughout the month, rather than simply waiting for symptoms to return, can have a positive impact on your work, relationships, confidence and quality of life.
My approach
Many women come to acupuncture because they feel they lose part of every month to their cycle.
Perhaps you already know exactly when the headaches will start, when your mood will change or when the cramps will become unbearable. You may have learnt to organise work, social plans or family life around those difficult days, accepting them as something you simply have to get through.
My role is to help change that.
During your first appointment, we'll explore your cycle in detail, not only your periods themselves but everything that happens before, during and afterwards. We'll discuss your symptoms, menstrual flow, cycle length, ovulation where relevant, sleep, digestion, energy, stress and anything else that may help us understand the bigger picture.
Because the menstrual cycle takes time to change, I usually recommend a course of regular acupuncture over three menstrual cycles. Some women notice improvements sooner, but working over three cycles allows us to observe meaningful changes, adapt treatment as your body responds and support ensure long-term improvements.
The aim is to help you enjoy every stage of your cycle with greater comfort, stability and confidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. Painful periods are one of the most common reasons women seek acupuncture. Treatment aims to reduce the intensity of menstrual pain and cramps while helping your cycle become healthier and more balanced over time.
-
For menstrual health, I generally recommend weekly treatments over three menstrual cycles.
This gives us enough time to work with the natural rhythm of your cycle, monitor how symptoms evolve from one month to the next and create lasting change rather than focusing on one individual period.
-
Yes. PMS often affects both body and mind. Acupuncture can help address symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, low mood, fatigue, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches and poor sleep as part of one integrated treatment approach.
-
Not at all. Whether you've experienced painful periods for a few years or since your first period, acupuncture can still help. Long-standing symptoms may simply require a little more time to improve, which is why a course of treatment is usually recommended.
-
Yes. Although acupuncture can support heavy, irregular or painful periods, it is always important to seek medical assessment if your symptoms are new, worsening or significantly affecting your health. Conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, PMOS (formerly PCOS) or thyroid disorders may require investigation, and acupuncture can work alongside your medical care where appropriate.
