Acupuncture for endometriosis
Endometriosis can be an extremely painful and debilitating condition.
For some women, symptoms become so severe that everyday life is deeply affected. Work, relationships, sleep, mental health and energy levels can all suffer under the weight of chronic pain and inflammation. Some women experience pain every day, not only during their periods. Others reach a point where they no longer feel able to cope physically or emotionally with their symptoms.
In clinic, I regularly see women who have spent years trying to push through pain, exhaustion and hormonal symptoms, often feeling dismissed or left without real long-term solutions. Some arrive completely depleted, crying from pain or fatigue because they simply cannot continue functioning in the same way anymore.
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can provide meaningful support in helping reduce pain, regulate the cycle, calm inflammation and improve quality of life again.
Symptoms of endometriosis
Endometriosis symptoms can vary greatly from one person to another and are not always proportional to the severity of the disease itself.
Symptoms may include (the list is not exhaustive):
severe period pain
chronic pelvic pain
pain during ovulation
pain during intercourse
digestive symptoms and bloating
pain when passing stools
lower back pain
fatigue and exhaustion
heavy periods
irregular bleeding
fertility difficulties
pain outside of menstruation
emotional distress linked to chronic pain
Many women also describe feeling inflamed, tense, exhausted or emotionally overwhelmed by the constant anticipation of pain throughout the cycle.
A Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, endometriosis is often understood through the concept of “Blood Stasis”, a term used to describe pain, stagnation and impaired circulation within the body.
Acupuncture treatment aims to move this stagnation, improve circulation and reduce the pain patterns associated with it. This is one of the reasons acupuncture can be particularly relevant for symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain, clotting, sharp or fixed pain and long-term inflammation.
However, Chinese Medicine does not look only at the condition itself. Treatment also considers the wider impact endometriosis may have on digestion, sleep, energy levels, stress, emotional wellbeing and overall quality of life.
How acupuncture can help
Acupuncture is widely used to support women living with endometriosis and can be very effective in helping manage pain and improve day-to-day quality of life.
Treatment aims to:
reduce pelvic pain and muscular tension
regulate the menstrual cycle
support circulation
calm inflammation
reduce digestive symptoms and bloating
improve sleep and energy levels
regulate stress responses linked to chronic pain
Many women notice that pain becomes less intense, less frequent or more manageable over time. Others find they rely less heavily on painkillers, recover better during their cycle or begin feeling more functional again physically and emotionally.
Treatment often works best as part of a broader long-term approach. Alongside acupuncture, we may also work on supportive lifestyle changes, anti-inflammatory nutrition, supplements and daily routines that help reduce symptom flare-ups and support the body more sustainably over time.
The aim is not simply to “cope” with endometriosis, but to help patients regain a better quality of life and feel more connected to their body again.
Fertility and endometriosis
Endometriosis can sometimes affect fertility, either directly through the condition itself or indirectly through chronic inflammation, pain and nervous system stress.
Many women choose to use acupuncture while trying to conceive naturally or alongside IVF treatment. Treatment may focus on supporting fertility directly, managing endometriosis symptoms, regulating the menstrual cycle or helping the body cope with the physical and emotional demands of fertility treatment.

Not necessarily, but lifestyle and dietary changes can sometimes make a significant difference to inflammation, pain and symptom management. Where relevant, these can be discussed alongside treatment.
