Acupuncture for fertility & IVF support

Trying to conceive can be physically, emotionally and mentally demanding.

For some people, the journey towards pregnancy happens relatively quickly. For others, it becomes months or years of uncertainty, hormonal treatments, medical appointments, disappointment and emotional exhaustion.

Fertility difficulties can affect every aspect of life: relationships, confidence, sleep, stress levels and the way people experience their own body.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine offer a broader approach to fertility support, looking not only at reproductive health itself, but also at the wider factors that may affect the body’s ability to regulate, recover and conceive.

Fertility from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective

TCM views fertility as closely linked to the overall health and balance of the body.

Rather than focusing only on reproduction itself, treatment considers the menstrual cycle, circulation, digestion, sleep, stress levels, inflammation, energy and emotional wellbeing as interconnected.

In clinic, I often see how prolonged stress, hormonal disruption, inflammation, exhaustion or chronic conditions such as endometriosis gradually affect the nervous system and the body more broadly over time.

Treatment therefore aims not only to support fertility directly, but also to create conditions where the body can regulate and function more effectively overall.

How acupuncture can help fertility

Acupuncture is widely used to support fertility both naturally and alongside assisted reproductive treatment such as IVF or egg freezing.

Treatment may help:

  • regulate the menstrual cycle

  • support ovulation

  • improve circulation

  • support hormonal balance

  • reduce inflammation

  • improve sleep and energy levels

  • support digestion

  • reduce stress and anxiety linked to fertility difficulties

  • help the body recover from the physical demands of hormonal treatment

IVF medications and hormonal stimulation can sometimes cause significant side effects, including bloating, headaches, fatigue, digestive symptoms, sleep disruption, emotional overwhelm or the feeling of being physically and mentally depleted. Acupuncture can be extremely valuable during this process in helping patients feel more regulated, supported and able to cope throughout treatment.

Alongside acupuncture, we may also work on supportive lifestyle changes, nutrition, supplements and daily routines that can help support reproductive health more broadly.

IVF and egg freezing support

Many patients choose to have acupuncture alongside IVF or egg freezing treatment.

Treatment can be adapted throughout the process depending on the stage of treatment, symptoms and priorities at that moment.

This may include:

  • supporting the body during ovarian stimulation

  • helping manage side effects from hormonal medication

  • supporting recovery after egg collection

  • preparing for embryo transfer

  • supporting the nervous system during the two-week wait

IVF can become intensely physical and emotional, particularly over multiple cycles.

One of the things patients often value about acupuncture during fertility treatment is that it creates a space where the body can slow down and recover within what can otherwise feel like a highly medicalised and overwhelming experience.

Male fertility

Fertility difficulties do not only affect women.

Acupuncture is also commonly used to support male fertility, particularly where stress, exhaustion, inflammation, sleep disruption or lifestyle factors may be contributing to sperm health and overall reproductive wellbeing.

Treatment is tailored individually and may support broader aspects of health that can affect fertility over time.

  • Yes. Acupuncture is widely used to support female fertility, both naturally and alongside IVF treatment. Treatment may help regulate the menstrual cycle, support ovulation, reduce inflammation and support overall reproductive health.

  • Yes. Acupuncture is also commonly used to support male fertility, particularly where stress, exhaustion, inflammation or lifestyle factors may affect reproductive health.

  • Research suggests acupuncture improves IVF clinical pregnancy and live birth rates for some patients, particularly when treatment is integrated appropriately throughout the IVF process.

  • Ideally, acupuncture support begins a few months before IVF treatment when possible, as this allows more time to regulate the cycle, support overall health and prepare the body before stimulation begins.

However, it is never “too late” to start. Many patients also begin acupuncture during stimulation, around embryo transfer or during later stages of fertility treatment.

  • Yes. Acupuncture can be very helpful in supporting patients experiencing side effects from hormonal treatment, including bloating, headaches, fatigue, digestive symptoms, poor sleep, anxiety or emotional overwhelm.

  • This depends on the individual, the stage of treatment and the symptoms present. Weekly sessions are common initially, although the rhythm of treatment is always adapted to each patient’s needs, priorities and what feels realistically possible for them.

Research

Acupuncture has been widely studied in the context of fertility and IVF support.

Several studies and meta-analyses suggest acupuncture improves IVF clinical pregnancy and live birth rates, while also helping reduce stress and anxiety during fertility treatment.

Fertility is complex and outcomes are influenced by many factors including age, diagnosis, general health and IVF protocols. Acupuncture is not a guarantee of pregnancy, but many patients find it to be a meaningful and effective part of their fertility journey.
