Postpartum recovery
Supporting recovery after birth with acupuncture
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the weeks following birth are considered one of the most important periods in a woman's life.
Across many East Asian cultures, new mothers are traditionally encouraged to rest, eat nourishing foods and be cared for by their family and community during the first month after birth. The philosophy is simple: by investing in a mother's recovery, we also invest in her long-term health and wellbeing.
Modern life rarely allows for this. Much of the attention naturally turns to the baby, while mothers are often expected to recover from pregnancy and birth while adjusting to life with a newborn.
Whether your birth was straightforward, instrumental, by C-section, or traumatic, your body has been through an extraordinary experience. Acupuncture offers gentle support during this important period, helping your body recover while creating space to look after yourself too.
Every postpartum journey is different
Some women recover quickly after birth, while others continue to experience symptoms weeks or months later. Recovery isn't always straightforward, and it's not uncommon to feel physically depleted or simply feel that your body hasn't quite found its balance again.
Acupuncture can support:

A Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding are understood to draw deeply on a woman's reserves. The weeks and months after birth are therefore seen as a unique opportunity to restore the body's reserves and support long-term health. Rather than focusing on one symptom at a time, treatment aims to help your body recover as a whole, supporting healing, rebuilding energy and easing the symptoms that are making this period more difficult.
My approach
The first appointment is an opportunity to understand your health as a whole. We'll talk about your health before pregnancy, your pregnancy and birth, how your recovery has been so far, and any concerns that have arisen since your baby was born.
Treatment is always tailored to where you are in your recovery and to what feels most important to you. Some women come in the first few weeks after birth for support with healing or breastfeeding, while others seek treatment months later because they still don't feel quite themselves or want to rebuild their energy.
Alongside acupuncture, I often discuss practical dietary and lifestyle recommendations where appropriate. These are always tailored to the individual and are intended to complement, not replace, conventional medical care.
Frequently asked questions
-
Acupuncture can often begin within the first few days after birth, depending on how you're feeling and whether there were any complications. Treatment is always adapted to your individual recovery and comfort.
-
Yes. Acupuncture is commonly used while breastfeeding and may help support lactation, blocked milk ducts, fatigue and general postpartum recovery.
-
Yes. Acupuncture can be remarkably effective in supporting recovery after a C-section. Once the incision has healed sufficiently, treatment help improve scar healing, reduce tightness, discomfort or numbness, and restore mobility in the surrounding tissues. Acupuncture also improves the appearance of the scar.
-
Absolutely. I understand that arranging childcare isn't always possible in the early weeks and months after birth, so babies are very welcome to come along to your appointment.
-
While I usually see patients in clinic, I can occasionally offer home visits during pregnancy or the early postpartum period for women I have been supporting, where travelling to the clinic is particularly difficult. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss your individual circumstances.
-
This depends on your symptoms, your recovery and your goals. Some women benefit from one or two treatments during the early postpartum period, while others choose a short course of weekly sessions before spacing appointments further apart.
The weeks after birth are a time of enormous change. If you feel your body could benefit from a little extra support during your recovery, I'd be pleased to welcome you to the clinic.
