Acupuncture for IBS and digestive health
Supporting healthy digestion and long-term gut health
Digestive symptoms can have a significant impact on daily life. Whether you experience bloating after meals, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, acid reflux or have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), ongoing digestive discomfort can affect your energy, mood and overall wellbeing.
Digestive symptoms often fluctuate with stress, diet, hormonal changes and lifestyle. While dietary changes can be an important part of improving digestive health, they are not always enough to address recurring symptoms or restore long-term balance.
Acupuncture can help regulate digestive function, reduce abdominal pain and bloating, support healthy bowel movements and calm the gut-brain axis. Treatment is tailored to your individual symptoms and aims to improve both digestive health and your overall wellbeing.
How acupuncture can support digestive health
Regulating the gut-brain axis
The digestive system and the nervous system are closely connected. Stress, anxiety and emotional wellbeing can all influence gut function, just as ongoing digestive symptoms can affect mood and quality of life.
Acupuncture helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, encouraging a shift from the body's "fight or flight" response towards the "rest and digest" state. This can help improve digestive function while reducing stress-related flare-ups.
Reducing abdominal pain and bloating
Bloating, abdominal discomfort and cramping are among the most common digestive complaints.
Acupuncture may help regulate intestinal activity, reduce visceral sensitivity and improve circulation to the digestive organs, helping to relieve pain, ease bloating and promote more comfortable digestion.
Supporting healthy bowel function
Whether symptoms involve constipation, diarrhoea or an alternating pattern of both, acupuncture aims to restore healthy bowel function rather than simply treating individual symptoms.
Treatment is adapted to your presentation and may help regulate bowel movements, improve digestive motility and reduce urgency or incomplete emptying.
Supporting overall wellbeing
Improving digestive health is about much more than relieving individual symptoms. As digestion becomes more balanced, many people notice improvements in their energy, sleep, mood and resilience to stress, alongside a greater sense of overall wellbeing.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective
In TCM medicine, digestive health plays a central role in overall wellbeing. The digestive system is responsible for transforming food into the energy and nourishment needed by every part of the body.
When digestion becomes weakened or unbalanced, symptoms such as bloating, loose stools, constipation, reflux, fatigue or brain fog can develop. Over time, digestive imbalances may also contribute to hormonal symptoms, recurrent infections, headaches, skin conditions or low energy.
Because the digestive system and the mind are closely connected, ongoing digestive symptoms can also affect mood, leaving you feeling irritable, anxious or mentally drained. Likewise, stress and emotional strain can have a profound effect on digestion, creating a cycle in which one perpetuates the other.
Treatment aims to strengthen digestive function, restore balance and support your body's natural ability to heal, helping both physical symptoms and overall wellbeing improve together.
My approach
During your first appointment, we'll take time to explore not only your digestive symptoms, but also your medical history, energy levels, sleep, eating habits, menstrual cycle (where relevant) and any other symptoms that may help us understand the bigger picture.
Every person is unique, and so is every treatment. Rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis or symptom, I aim to understand how your digestive health fits into your overall picture so that treatment addresses both what's happening now and the underlying patterns that may be contributing to it.
Alongside acupuncture, I may also offer simple dietary and lifestyle advice where appropriate. These recommendations are always practical, personalised and designed to support your treatment rather than adding unnecessary restrictions.
